Jeremiah Pratt

Jeremiah Pratt was born circa 1744, possibly in Newton, Middlesex County, Province of Massachusetts Bay.  He was the son of Oliver Pratt and his wife Sarah Willard.  He is a descendant of Degory Priest of the Mayflower and his wife Sarah Allerton, through their daughter Mary the wife of Phineas Pratt. 

Jeremiah Pratt of Newton and Sarah Newton of Needham entered their intention to marry on November 12, 1769 and were married on December 5, 1769 in Newton.  Sarah was born on July 9, 1749 in Southborough, Middlesex, Province of Massachusetts Bay, the daughter of Robert Newton and his wife Mary Mills.  By 1771, Jeremiah and Sarah Pratt had moved to Winchester, Cheshire County, Province of New Hampshire where all of their children were born.  They had eight known children:  Sarah, Mary, Jeremiah, Rebecca, Olive, Meribah, Susanna, and Robert. 

Jeremiah Pratt provided patriotic service in support of the Revolutionary War.  On May 12, 1775, Capt. Samuel Smith, Ensign Reuben Alexander, Nehemiah Houghton, Philip Goss, Jeremiah Pratt and John Alexander were chosen as the Committee of Inspection for Winchester.  On June 3, 1776 he signed the Association Test in Support of the Committee of Safety.  On March 3, 1778 he was selected as Surveyor of Highways and as a Selectman in 1781 for Winchester.  His brother Noah Pratt (A092605) served as a soldier in the Revolutionary War. 

Jeremiah Pratt died on April 16, 1826 in Winchester.  He is buried in Evergreen Cemetery and his headstone reads:  Capt. JEREMIAH PRATT, / DIED April 16, 1826 in / his 82 year. / My Saviour calls and I must go / And leave you here my friends below / But soon my God will call for thee / Prepare for death and follow me.  Sarah (Newton) Pratt died on May 1, 1835 in Winchester.  Her headstone read:  Mrs. SARAH Relict / of Capt. / Jeremiah Pratt, / died 1 / May, 1835, AE. 86. / Reader behold, as you pass by / As you are now, so once was I / As I am now, so you must be / Prepare for death, and follow me.
