Archibald Harwood was born in August 1762 probably in Dunstable Township (later Nashua, Hillsborough County), Province of New Hampshire. He enlisted in Dunstable Township on July 6, 1780 as a Private in Captain William Barrows Company, Colonel Moses Nichols, Regiment for the defense of West Point and then in Captain John Mills, Colonel Daniel Reynolds, Fifth Regiment of New Hampshire Militia; “he was one of those who were sold (but not delivered) to the British by the traitor Arnold.” The Harwood Genealogy states: “He used often to relate to his children how Washington addressed the soldiers after Arnold’s treachery became known. He pleaded with them to remain loyal to the American cause.”

He again served in the Fifth Regiment of Militia as a “Three Months Man” under Colonel Noah Lovewell beginning on September 17, 1781. The Harwood Genealogy further states: “he never in his old age applied for a pension, being naturally of a very independent disposition.”
